Dublin Zoo - Why Ireland

Dublin Zoo has been enthralling families since 1831 and even in a world of iPads and iPhones it won’t disappoint today.

Once inside, the Victorian buildings, elegant landscaping and the exotic animal sounds all add to the feeling of excitement.

Of course things have changed a lot here since Victorian times. These days the zoo occupies a much more spacious area in the Phoenix Park and great developments have taken place to ensure that animals live in habitats as close to their own as possible.

Exotic safari
Everyone in the family from kids to grannies and grandads can spend a fascinating day exploring the World of Cats, World of Primates, Kaziranga Forest Trails, Fringes of the Arctic, African Plains and the many other carefully designed areas.

In fact, a trip to the zoo is like an exotic safari right around the world – but you can still be home in time for tea!

Wildlife preserve
Some favourites include the wildlife preserve which contains over 90 species of animals that all roam freely for the enjoyment of the guests.

Other big hits are the primate islands, where a huge variety of monkeys swing and hoot and entertain. And be sure to check out Savannah which is home to the zoo’s large African animals.

Compare the Meerkats
There is literally something to please everyone – from the deadly species like the Amur tigers, to the cuddly (check out the red pandas) or the hilarious (don’t miss the merkats or the penguins). And don’t forget the Nakuru safari ride, keeper talks, play areas and the unique Meerkat restaurant.

City Farm
Another great attraction is the City Farm – an acre of fun that represents an island of farming. Children will encounter animals like the beef cow and her calf, the ewe with her little lambs, the weaner and Tamworth pigs, pygmy goats as well as geese and hens. There is even a dairy cow called Bluebell which kids can watch getting milked every day.

Combining fun and learning for all the family, the zoo also has a 70-acre wildlife conservatory that actually works to breed endangered species from five continents. Don’t miss it!
